Look at your caravan’s layout

Before you set off, take a good look around the interior of your caravan, and try to envision how it’s going to work as your family home for a few nights. Think about your sleeping arrangements, and whether there’s enough space for everyone to relax and unwind. If you have small children, you may want to double check the safety of your appliances and furnishings. If you’re going to be travelling with older children or teens, think about whether there are any private areas for them to escape the rest of the clan when they need to.

Pick the perfect pitch

When you have the kids in tow, picking the right pitch is more important than ever. It may be all about the views and local walks when it’s just a touring break for two, but when it comes to holidaying with the kids, your choice of campsite is going to take centre stage.

Look for a family-friendly campsite with onsite amenities. If you get a wet day or you fancy staying close to your caravan, facilities such as an indoor pool and games rooms can be invaluable. There are some fantastic touring parks on the UK’s coastline, so if you pick carefully, you’ll be able to wake up within earshot of the sea and get yourselves to the beach before the crowds.

Think food and entertainment

There’s nothing relaxing about a long drive to your pitch with the kids getting bored, so make sure you pack plenty to keep them entertained for the journey. You may not want them glued to their iPads and games once you’re at your destination, but they could come in handy if you’ve got a bit of a drive to get there.

You’ll need to put some planning into mealtimes before you go too. If you have fussy eaters in your clan, it might not be possible to just wing it and see what your caravan site has to offer. Why not make an adventure of mealtimes and pack some simple meals to cook up al fresco?

It’s all about the awning

Adding an awning to your caravan can be a godsend for a family caravan holiday. When the interior starts to feel a bit of a squeeze, that extra space outside can mean more room to relax and unwind without worrying about the weather. If you’re holidaying during summer, awning can help shade the kids on a hot day without them having to stay inside.

There’s nothing better than a family meal in the fresh air and adding awning will enable you to pop a picnic table outside your caravan and eat in the Great Outdoors.  

Plan your distances

Heading off in the caravan may be a chance to escape from it all, but if you’re travelling with small children, further away isn’t always better. If you choose the right touring park, you shouldn’t have to venture too far from home for your kids to experience the excitement of the open road.

As a rule, picking parks that are within a four-hour drive from your starting point is a good idea when you have the kids in tow. Take some time to plan your route and note down any scenic pitstops along the way. If you’re feeling super organised, you can even pack a picnic so you don’t have to feed the kids at the services.
