Photography insurance FAQs

Photography insurance may not be a legal requirement, unless you have employees and require statutory cover such as employers' liability.

You may also be required by your clients or other businesses to have other covers in place to meet your contractual obligations. This could range from public liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance or hired-in equipment insurance.

Although insurance for cameras and equipment you own isn’t mandatory it is best to consider having this as the cost of replacing equipment alone can be hugely expensive. Photography insurance can help to protect you in this instance. It will also give you greater peace of mind when using your equipment in the UK or abroad to get you up and running again as quickly as possible.

We replace your items on a new for old basis so; in the unfortunate event of a total loss you get the latest equivalent model as a replacement. By checking how much an equivalent replacement costs in the market today, you will get a good idea of the value you should insure your own equipment for. Don’t forget, if you are VAT-registered you can deduct this element from your total value.

We have a variety of covers available to suit your travel arrangements, from UK cover, to UK and Europe cover, to worldwide. Our standard cover is UK and 45 days worldwide; you do not need to notify us when you go abroad unless you exceed 45 days in any one policy year. If worldwide cover is selected, travel cover is unlimited; however, a maximum trip limit of 90 days in any one trip is applicable.

If you have any queries in respect of cover abroad, please contact us.

Everyone is different so this depends on what your requirements are: whether you earn a living from your photography or do it just for fun.

You will want to insure your equipment for the full replacement cost on a ‘new for old’ basis. We can provide quotes for equipment from a few hundred pounds to full productions where kit prices can be more than £100,000. We are also able to offer a variety of public liability limits including £2 million, £5 million and £10 million.

We can provide £10 million of employer's liability cover. This cover is a legal requirement if you have employees. If you are unsure which level of cover would suit you best it is worth speaking with one of our specialist advisors.

The answer is no provided you have receipts and invoices for your camera equipment in the event of a claim. If you are concerned that you may not have these then please supply an equipment list, and this can be good business practice to make sure that your sum insured is always adequate.
